Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Sunnyvale public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Proposed preschool at 125 Arcas Avenue
A resident representing about 20 neighbors raised objections to a proposed preschool at the Saint Mark Lutheran Church site ahead of a zoning administrator hearing, citing short notice and traffic/water quality concerns.
Category F executive benefits update
About a dozen top city executives get a new 40-hour annual leave bank plus bigger car and phone allowances — but no raise this year. The city says it's cheaper than the old compensation formula.
Citywide year-end holiday closure pilot
Non-essential city facilities will close for three business days between Christmas and New Year's on a trial basis this year.
Moffett Park 'climate wall' green infrastructure proposal
A resident proposed a network of green infrastructure — trees, rain gardens, wetlands — along the North Shore near Moffett Park to absorb sea-level rise. It was an Oral Communications idea only; no action was taken.
Transformer undergrounding requirements
Commissioners clashed over whether the city should keep requiring undergrounded utility transformers when PG&E won't allow it and there's a national shortage. Commissioner Pyne warned he'll press the Community Development Director to use waiver authority in future cases.
Noise Ordinance Review Request
A resident asked the Council to review Sunnyvale's noise ordinance, saying the current decibel-based code gives police no practical tool for recurring loud neighbor conversations late at night. The City Attorney confirmed general talking isn't enforceable under the current code; a council priority project process would be needed to change it.
Historic preservation at 434 Crescent Avenue
A .26-acre lot would keep its 1930 craftsman bungalow and add four three-story townhomes, relocating a large oak tree on-site. Commissioners praised the design and near-zero deviations; a Heritage Preservation Commission review and public hearing are still ahead.
Proposed cricket field at Baylands Park
Councilmember Sell is proposing a recreational cricket field at Baylands Park in North Sunnyvale, where no adult-sized cricket field currently exists. The field would use no artificial lighting to protect the park's wetland bird habitat.
Golf and tennis enterprise subsidy
The golf fund stays self-sustaining through FY 2028-29, then needs about $500,000 a year in general fund support. Vice Mayor Mehlinger flagged that subsidy as a place to find savings during the lean pension years.
